I am using "PCI" just for the for the passive backplane, just as we are
using the euro connector. Not using the pci signals, in the defined
standard. Using a computer enclosure for the power supply and board supports
on L brackets. The on/off switch, leds etc. In the Aria case there are also
card readers and usb connectors which might be interfaced to a future
project board. Using the space inside the enclosure for mounting other
components like crystal ovens Power amps etc. Using the open space for
access to the project boards on all four sides instead of 1 side to connect
the lvds buss signals accoss boards with scsi cable. We could even mod the
case with a beautiful silkscreen of the project name winner. 

PCI was my initial suggestion, since parts are available everywhere. I
rejected it due to the massive size of the boards. However, we already at
100 x 100 board size (mandatory) which is probably about the size we need to
plug into the PCI and still mount it in a standard computer enclosure.

PCI bus requires a pretty complex control scheme.  If you're going to 
use PCI, why not just make plug-in cards for a PC?

The beauty of the 96-pin DIN connector on a passive backplane is that 
there is effectively no overhead.  Think S-100 bus from decades gone by. 
  It's just traces and pin definitions, nothing more.
