Re: [Xylo-SDR] TeamspeakFPGAdiscussion-Have we paintedourselvesinto a corner?Boxedourselves in?

Well, I was not specifically looking for them but Vector makes almost
everything. I have found that all of the "Industrial stuff" is pretty
expensive.

http://www.vectorelect.com/Catpdf/Pages%2026-28.pdf

I think I saw a 10 inch deep x 19 inch subrack like this for about $200 and
I think that Vector would assemble racks for us, but it is kind of bulky and
not too worthy of a 'desktop' type product. It would run more than $200 with
4 backplane connectors, card slides enclosures etc. I didn't take a long
look at the dealer, hobby marketplace tho. I do think this route is out of
the $ and utility question.

While doing laundry and folding clothes, I had some other thoughts about
this whole MB pin connector we have chosen.

There are plenty of inexpensive protoboards for the 64 pin connector but I
have only seen the 96 pin x 160 mm proto at vector and don't know the price.
Phil_c and Bill are the only ones doing prototyping at the moment but they
are absolutely crucial to the success of this and other projects as are
others in this group. If prototype boards are $$$ it is going to squash
experimentation. Which also really means that Leon's Cyclone FPGA, also
should be 'standalone' for dead bug stuff.

It is a little more difficult to make the 96 pin board a 'stand' alone board
which would be VERY desireable for "non-backplane" experimentation, like the
Xylo/Saxo.

The 96 pin can't be 'ribbon cabled'.

If what has been mentioned about not putting clocks or other high speed
stuff over the backplane there is no need for 96 pins, and 64 pins at .100
should be more than sufficient.

In response to Chris, we did have a thread going about buss pin naming and
pin assignments. I didn't see any diagrams or "What If's yet" except for
powers.

Does anyone out there know how we CAN put high speed on some form of 'quiet'
buss? That is what started all this backtracking anyway and we ARE going to
need lvds.

Are SCSI HD cables twisted pairs? I know they can be active terminated if
that helps with FPGA's.

If it is twisted pair as Cecil mentioned, is there a twisted pair standard
besides Ethernet Cat 5E/RJ-45 point to point?

Would Ribbon twisted pairs be sufficient for low noise with the 1.5" flats
for IDC connectors? If so could we go with IDC connectors and a "Flexible
motherboard"?

Thanks
Eric

Good looking box, worthy to keep in mind for new CPU project.

Did you find a EuroBuss passive backplane MB in ur gurgling should we decide
to not design our own?

Well for certain the jury is still out on the subject. Obviously there are a
number of very well considered objections, on the PCI passive backplane, as
well as some unanswered questions.

I really like my Aria enclosures and mini-itx MB flamethrowers. It would be
what I would buy for this project if we were going PCI and passive
backplane. However, any ATX enclosure would work.

Actually the EuroBuss connector backplane we invented is well condidered and
designed, And really has only 2 parts that need to be inventoried and
sourced -> the ATX connector and the board itself. The Rose+Bopla enclosure
can be ordered in $100 dollar quantities and cut to size so is almost 'off
the shelf', although aluminum backplate is going to have to be custom.
